Durango is located in La Plata county in the southwest corner of Colorado, in the Animas River Valley and surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. Durango is close to the Four Corners area, where Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona meet. The City of Durango comprises 4.37 square miles, while La Plata county is 1,700 square miles.

DURANGO MOUNTAIN RESORT
Durango Mountain Resort, formerly known as Purgatory, is located 25 miles north of Durango. 1,200 acres of terrain is served by 11 lifts with an average snowfall of 260 inches and 2,029 ft of vertical drop. It also offers a wide range of summer and winter event activities. The Alpine Slide, a winding mountain slide, is open from early June to late September.
